John Paul II
John Paul II is a most famous Pole ever. He is very important person not only for Poland but for the whole World. As a pope, John Paul II was propagating universal values of love, peace and respect for all human beings. He was not only a head of Catholic Church, but also one of the most charismatic leaders in history. He sacrificed his life for helping people who are suffering of poverty, enslavement and injustice.


 

The birth name of John Paul II is Karol Wojtyła. He was born in 18th May 1920 in Wadowice. As a student Wojtyła was a co-founder of theatre. Expect of acting Karol Wojtyła was interested in philosophy, mystic and poetry. During World War II he was a member of Union - students organization which was fighting with Germans and helping Jews.

Decision about becoming a priest Wojtyła made in 1942. After four years of studying he became a clergymen. As a priest and later bishop and cardinal, Karol Wojtyła loved to work with youth. He was keen in sport, especially in climbing and canoeing. He always tried to be close to people.

Karol Wojtyła has been chosen for a pope in 1978. During his pontificate he was travelling a lot to visit places where people needed spiritual support. He had a great influence for events in Poland which led to emancipate from soviet supremacy. John Paul II was often called Intercessor of Peace and after his death in 2005 many people started to call him John Paul the Great.
