The best way to enjoy its beauty is a visit in Zakopane, a small town which lays at the foot of the mountains. It's inhabited by mountaineers (Gorale), a small ethnic group for whom this town is a home to their culture and customs.

Zakopane in the Past

Zakopane used to be a small village of farmers and shepherds, but in the 19th century was discovered by Warsaw doctor, Tytus Chalubinski, and soon after this became a home for many Polish intellectuals and artists. Now this region is a getaway from everyday urban life for many Poles and foreigners.

In the winter Zakopane is a major Polish skiing resort and in summertime it becomes the most desired destination for all who like hill walking, mountaineering, cycling or just being amongst nature.
