Commemoration of 72nd Anniversary of WWII outbreak began yesterday with half-an-hour reconstruction of the Battle of Westerplatte. The battle started on 1 September, 1939 at 4:45 A.M. 182 Polish soldiers fought 3500 German soldiers for 7 days.
The staging was directed by famous Polish journalist - Boguslaw Woloszanski. Detonation sounds imitated the attack of "Schleswig Holstein" panzer tank on the Polish military warehouse on Westerplatte, there were 70 reconstructors involved and the area was thoroughly shaped to resemble the battlefield. The pageant was watched by hundreds of Gdansk's inhabitants and members of Polish Governement with prime minister Donald Tusk.
This reconstruction was a part of "The Great Theatre of History" project, featuring other episodes of Polish history.
The next part of the project will take place in Sochaczew on 17th and 18th of September and will deal with the Battle of Bzura which could have changed the fate of the September Campaign.
Let these events be homage to all the heroes fighting heroically during the WWII and let them help us keep in mind the value of peace...
