Gdansk Sights - Gdansk City Hall

Amount of Gdansk sights is such great, that you aren’t able to see even a half of the most important places during only one visit. That’s why you should carefully choose what to see first. We want to help you, so we present places that are simply a MUST-SEES! However you have to remember, that it’s only a little example of marvelous places which are offered by Gdansk.

Main City

Most of best-known monuments of Gdansk are placed in the area of Main City. This historical area was divided for three parts: Mariacka district, Swietojanska district and Podwale. Nowadays it is the one part and the most important place in the city, which is also the best point to start sightseeing of Gdansk.

On the area of Main City we can find such monuments like the city hall, impressive, 14th century building which was the seat of authorities. Nowadays in the city hall there’s a Historical Museum of Gdansk. For special attention deserves Carillon - musical instrument made with bells, which can play several melodies.

In the Main City we can find also Długi Targ (The Long Market) - the most famous street of Gdansk, Neptun’s Fountain, remains of medieval fortifications with the torture chamber and prison tower, few city gates with the most famous Crane Gate on the Motlawa river and many, many more breath-taking places with amazing architecture and fantastic history.


The building of Polish Post

The building of Polish Post is a place where one of the most glorious episodes during World War II had place. Next to Westerplatte, seat of post is recognized as a place where the war has begun. In September 1939 about 4am, German soldiers attacked building of Polish Post. At the moment of charge in post office was fifty three postmen, one railway man, caretaker, his wife and daughter, armed with short pistols, few rifles and several grenades.

Postmen was prepared for defending for about six hours. They forced back five attacks of overwhelming German soldiers. Because of tragic situation on west border reinforcements didn’t come and brave defenders of post office had to surrender after sixteen hours of fighting. Those who didn’t able to escape has been captured and convicted to dead by unlawful German court martial.

Gdansk post office is one of the most famous symbols of braveness and heroism of Polish soldiers during World War II. Nowadays, the building is a part of Historical Museum of Gdansk - Museum of Polish Post.


New Port Lighthouse

Lighthouse in New Port (Nowy Port - district of Gdansk) has important connection with the World War II beginning. From the top of this lighthouse was fired a shot which was the signal for German battleship - Schleswig-Holstein, to start the attack. This moment is recognized as a beginning of the greatest war in history.

Nowadays lighthouse is out of order and opened for tourists. It’s recognized as the one of most beautiful lighthouses of Baltic coast. Inside we can admire old optical equipment and great exhibition about Polish lighthouses.


Gdansk Shipyard

Monument of Fallen Shipbuilders

Probably one of the most famous places in Poland or even in Europe. Gdansk Shipyard is a symbolical place of communism era fall. Thank to events from 1980 which had place exactly in Gdansk Shipyard, soviet jurisdiction started to shrink and in the end it has totally fallen. Possibility for living in free Europe we owe to “Solidarity” and Lech Walesa.

Except of financial problems shipyard is still in order, that’s why it isn’t possible to see it from the inside. However there are concerts organized every year, called “Przestrzen Wolności” (“Space of Freedom”), to commemorate glorious events of 1980 which is taking place in Gdansk Shipyard. We can also admire The Monument of Fallen Shipbuilders next to shipyard gates.
