1st constitution in Europe and 2nd after USA in the World. This is something that Poles can be proud of! It’s no wonder that anniversary of 3rd May 1791 is one of the most important national days in Poland! Every single year Poles celebrate the day of resolution which was the first step of real democracy in Poland and Europe!
Constitution was enacted on 3rd of May 1791. Its main aim was to remove all institutions which was disastrous for the country like liberum veto rule and to restrict gentry’s freedom because gentry’s democracy which was Polish political system before, made that Poland was threatened by the Russians.
3rd of May’s constitution had plenty of advantages for our nation, but unfortunately vain nobles didn’t want to lose their rights and they didn’t care about good of whole country. The created Confederation and sent a letter to Russian emperor Catharine II with the request to help them with keeping their unfair rights. It was the beginning of War for Constitution which was one of the main reasons of Polish Partition.
Poles loose their independence for over 120 years but they didn’t forget about aims of 3rd of May’s Constitution. It was the symbol of our patriotism and freedom. When we got our independence back anniversary of 3rd of May became the national day and it is still. This is another glorious part of our nation’s history!
