Polish film and theatre director. Founder of Polish Film School. Laureate of Oscar honor award. Andrzej Wajda was born in 1926 in Suwalki. His father, Jacob was a captain in Polish Army, mother – Aniela was a teacher. Father took part in September Campaign on Polish territory in 1939, he got caught by USSR Army and was murdered in Katyn. |

Wałęsa was born in Popowo, Poland, to a carpenter and his wife. He attended primary and vocational school, before entering "Lenin Shipyard" in Gdańsk ("Stocznia Gdańska im. Lenina", now "Stocznia Gdańska") as an electrical technician in 1970. In 1969 he married Danuta Gołoś, and the couple now have eight children. His son Jarosław Wałęsa is a member of Poland's Sejm (lower house of the Polish parliament). Lech Wałęsa is a devout Roman Catholic, and has said that his faith always helped him during Solidarity's difficult moments. |

Pope John Paul II (18 May 1920 – 2 April 2005) reigned as Pope and Sovereign of the State of the Vatican City from 16 October 1978 until his death almost 27 years later. His was the second-longest pontificate. He has been the only Polish pope, and was the first non-Italian since the Dutch pontiff Adrian VI in the 1520s.
