Auschwitz & Birkenau concentration camps, “Schlindler's List”, the Nazi occupation of Poland (including Krakow) - these are just some of the areas covered during your Study Tour in Poland. Site of the world's most notorious genocide and mass grave. Built in 1940 as a concentration camp for Polish political prisoners, in 1942 it became the centre for the extermination of European Jews. Between 1940 and 1945 the Nazis killed around 1.5 million people in Aushwitz/Birkenau, mainly Jews but also Poles, gypsies, Russian POWs and others. Oscar Schindler was a Catholic and profiteer during World War II. Initially he prospered by going along with the Nazi regime, but ultimately saved the lives of more than a thousand Jews by giving them jobs in his Krakow factory. Schlindler lost his wealth but redeemed himself through his courage and generosity. His story was filmed by Steven Spielberg in 1993.
