Town Hall
Town hall in Pozna? is one of the most important Renaissance buildings in Europe. It was built at the turn of the XIII and XIV century. In the fifteenth century there was erected gothic backbone of the tower. In the years 1550-1560 the town hall has undergone a fundamental reconstruction by the Italian architect Giovanni Baptysta Quadro.
The town hall survived intact until 1945, when its upper floors have been incinerated. Currently, the city hall is the seat of the Museum of the History of the City of Poznan with a permanent exhibition dedicated to the city.
Town Scales
Town scales despite its size is only one story building.
In the past, there was a scales inside, the device necessary for making a commercial transaction, because in Poznan weights and measures system was not standardized.
For a small fee you could weighed everything.
The building of town scales was erected in the mid-sixteenth century, and in 1563 was expanded by J.B. Quadro, which gave him a renaissance look. At the end of the nineteenth century, the edifice was demolished, and so called New City Hall took its place.
After the Second World War the building was reconstructed. Currently, there is a register Office.
Emperor’s Castle
Emperor’s Castle was erected in the years 1904-1910 as a residence for Emperor Wilhelm II (hosted here on two occasions: in 1910 and 1915 years). The palace was built in neoroman style.
The residence was designed by Franz Schwechten, and the facade and interiors by Gothold Riegelmann. Originally, the dominant feature was a clock tower (74 m), but during the post-war reconstruction it was reduced by 20 m.
However, the most changes have been carried out during World War II by the Germans who were preparing the castle for Hitler residence. In the former emperor,s chapel the cabinet was arranged for Führer.
Currently in the palace there is located the Center of Culture. In The Throne Hall there is cinema palaces, and the apartments are used for the galleries.
