This tour leads you into the south-east district of Krakow - KAZIMIERZ - from the 14th century known as Jewish District of the city. During the II World War the Jews of Krakow, including those in Kazimierz, were forced by the Nazis into a crowded ghetto in Podgórze. Most of them were later killed during the liquidation of the ghetto or in the death camps. Those who survived the war have mostly deserted Kazimierz and that is why Jewish population of the district has fallen from 45 thousand in the beginning of XX century to about 150 people living there today.
Kazimierz is now a popular destination among artist and tourists from all over the world. In last years there have been many restorations of important historic sites of the district and a booming growth in Jewish-themed restaurants, bars, bookstores and souvenir shops here. The Jewish culture is still present in Kazimierz and since 1988 annual Jewish Cultural Festival has been held here.
Spielberg’s ‘Schindler List’
District became famous in the beginning of 90’s thanks to Steven Spielberg movie showing the history of Oscar Schindler – German manufacturer who after his mental transformation started to help Polish Jews in Kazimierz and saved more than a thousand of them from slavery work and death. This touching movie schoted in Krakow’s Kazimierz and based on a true story received seven Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Score. In 2007, the American Film Institute (AFI) ranked the film eighth on its list of the 100 best American films of all time.
