Euro 2012 stadiums in Poland

One of the major elements of Poland's preparations for Euro 2012 involved building sport facilities. Completely new stadiums as well as redecorated ones are ready to host the big football events.

The stadium whose capacity is 55,000 spectators is equipped with the system of a pull-out roof, heated grass pitch and stands. There are 130,000 sq.m conference and usable area and 1,759 underground parking spots (which are located under the field) as well as a Sports Museum.

The stadium cost around € 360,000,000 in total. Its elevation features amazing illumination possibilities which were presented in an illumination show in November last year. Apart from the sport events the stadium will be used for other purposes, such as concerts, performances etc.

The Stadium is conveniently located within 10 min by tram or bus from the city centre.

The stadium which can host 45,000 spectators cost € 163,000,000 and has been the cheapest of all Polish stadiums built for Euro 2012. It was officially opened on 20th Sept 2010 and used for football as well as cultural events, among others Sting's performance. So far it has been used by Polish teams: Lech Poznan and Warta Poznan.

Initially the stadium, whose construction started a few years ago, was not destined to be one for Euro 2012. In the meantime, however, the plans and projects have been modified in such a way that it could become an official Euro 2012 stadium.

It is conveniently situated within 15 min by bus from the city centre.

The stadium which can host 44,000 spectators was initially called Baltic Arena. It was built in a poor district of Gdansk where people had their allotments. This was the reason why it took a long time to redeem the land for the construction. In the end it was finally finished in July 2011, after just a slight delay.

The stadium is supposed to resemble a chunk of amber which is a typical mineral of that region.

The stadium is located within 25 min from the city centre and 15 min from the main Train Station.

The stadium's capacity is 43,000 spectators. Its shape was supposed to resemble a lantern symbolising a dynamic development of the city. It is a new modern centre which will be mainly used as a conference centre after the football events.

Accommodation of the English Team

The Hotel Stary in which the English Team will be accommodated is a luxurious 5-star hotel of a unique atmosphere and interiors located in the Old Town just a few steps from the heart of Krakow - Market Square. It has been adapted from a 15. century tenement house and is the winner of the most beautiful interior in Europe title by french organisation "Prix Villégiature". The Team will have the entire hotel at their own disposal.

The English Team Trainings at Hutnik Stadium

Not so long time ago English journalists could not call the Hutnik stadium in Krakow other than a landfill. It was hardly believable that it may serve well as a training base for the English Team. However, their last visit in Krakow caused a wave of optimism as it has been totally renovated and is nothing like it used to be. The journalists are just amazed at the pitch grass at the stadium and other changes that were made there.

The English Team is going to have a training open to public on 8th June. More than 2 thousand spectators will have a chance to see training preparations for the big event. The tickets will be available at the Board of Management of Sport Infrastructure in Krakow.

The Federation want the players to spend their time actively participating in cultural events of the country they are visiting, unlike the football championship in 2010 in South Africa where the players spent most of their time at the hotel. However, the coach warns his team not to go too far with partying in their free time between the games. He believes his players will be recognisable in public and even a single incident may badly contribute to the reputation of the whole team. It does not mean, however, that the players will stay at their hotel all the time. He just emphasises that they have to act responsibily and with respect.

Teh English Squad visited the Auschwitz and Birkenau Camps, former concentration camps from the times of the WW2 and the place of extermination of millions of Jews, Poles, Gypsies, Russian POWs and other nations. Auschwitz memorial site is visited by over a million of people every year wanting to pay tribute to the victims of mass executions.
