The Tatra Mountains are without doubt one of the places where you can experience the beauty and romance of wild and unspoilt natural landscapes.
Zakopane is a small town which lies at the foot of the Tatra Mountains. It's inhabited by "the Highlanders" (Gorale), a small ethnic group for whom this town is a home for their culture and customs.
Zakopane used to be a village of farmers and shepherds but in the 19th century was discovered by a Warsaw doctor, Tytus Chalubinski, and soon after this became a home for many Polish intellectuals and artists.
Now this region is a getaway from everyday urban life for many Poles and foreigners.
In the winter Zakopane is a major Polish skiing resort and by summertime it becomes the most desired destination for all who like hill walking, mountaineering, cycling or just being amongst nature.
The Tatra Mountains offer great beauty with their magnificent lakes and waterfalls and breathtaking views.
